A Utrecht University master's student has proposed a new method, eFIFO, for calculating fish-in-fish-out ratios. The method counts by-products as free raw material and suggests farmed salmon and tilapia need only about 1 kg of wild fish input for 3 to 4 kg of farmed output.
The result challenges earlier estimates of feed inefficiency.
If accepted, more favourable FIFO figures could ease pressure on the fishmeal and fish oil supply used by aquaculture, though the effect is a matter of research framing rather than immediate price movement.
