NEW Cooperative broke ground on an $11 million barge terminal at Missouri River Mile 680.5 near Blencoe, Iowa, on September 9. The port can handle six barges at once and aims to move 240,000 tons of soybeans, corn, distillers' grains, fertilizer and lime annually.
It will be the northernmost commercial port on the Missouri River.
A new northern barge outlet gives western Iowa farmers a cheaper route to export grain and receive fertilizer, which can narrow local basis and reduce transport costs over time.
