US producer prices rose 0.4% in September, above the 0.2% forecast by Reuters economists, led by a surge in hotel and motel accommodation costs. It was the first year-on-year gain since March, and core PPI rose 0.4% excluding food, energy and trade services.
A hotter-than-expected PPI points to firmer US input cost inflation, which can support the dollar and weigh on commodities priced in dollars at the margin. The effect on feed grain prices is likely small since the rise was driven by services.
After 23 past neutral report events, US Dollar (Broad) moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (57% higher; middle half -0.2% to +0.4%), and +0.5% over 20.
