Canadian researchers are developing methods to turn oat hulls, about 30% of the kernel and usually low-value byproducts, into flour-like ingredients, fibre, and stabilized oat oil powder. The Saskatchewan Food Centre aims to raise hull value from 90 cents to up to $3 per kilogram.
Higher value for oat hulls could add a small revenue stream for oat processors, but the effect on feed grain prices is negligible at this stage.
