Changing Markets published an investigation into Peru's fishmeal and fish oil industry. The report says Peru produces about one-third of global supply, exports more than 1 million tonnes a year, and expects about $2 billion in 2020 export revenue.
It alleges underreported catches, overfishing of juveniles and pollution in Chimbote.
The report is an NGO critique rather than a supply change, so its direct price effect is limited. Scrutiny of catch practices could eventually lead to tighter quotas or stricter enforcement, which would tighten fishmeal supply.
