Defra is preparing to announce a housing order that would require all outdoor UK poultry flocks to be kept indoors amid a growing avian influenza threat. The order follows an outbreak at a Northallerton turkey farm on 29 November and a GB-wide prevention zone imposed earlier in November.
Housing orders prevent free-range flocks from being labelled free range and add costs for producers, potentially reducing outdoor production. Confinement increases disease risk management needs and may tighten UK egg and poultry supply.
