Total downbound barge traffic through the Mississippi, Illinois, Ohio and Arkansas river locks has fallen over the last three weeks, according to the USDA Grain Transportation Report. Water levels have dropped rapidly since earlier flooding, causing groundings, and Coast Guard and Corps warnings have been issued.
Barge shipping rates are high and few barges are available upriver.
Grounding hazards, speed restrictions and a shortage of barges reduce grain moved by river and keep barge rates elevated, which raises the delivered cost of grain for interior buyers.
