KResearch reports that the US designated Vietnam a currency manipulator because its net foreign currency purchases reached 5.1 percent of GDP, above the 2.0 percent benchmark. It estimates the State Bank of Vietnam may need to revalue the dong by 5 to 7 percent to reduce the risk of US trade retaliation.
A 5 to 7 percent dong revaluation would lower USD/VND and make Vietnamese imports cheaper. KResearch expects only a limited effect on Vietnam's export competitiveness.
