The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mat Sinking Unit is working on the lower Mississippi during the current low-water season to lay concrete mats that prevent riverbank erosion. The unit has worked since July 21, 2020 and has reached as far south as Mile 43.7.
The work is routine river maintenance and does not change barge capacity or grain freight costs in a meaningful way. It has little direct effect on feed commodity prices.
