The St. Louis region's ports were ranked the most efficient inland port district in the United States, based on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers data analyzed by S&P Global. The region's barge industry handled about four times the average tons per mile of the other seven inland port districts.
St. Louis is the main hub for export grain on the Inland Waterway, so its efficiency helps keep barge costs lower for shippers. The ranking describes existing capacity and does not signal a near-term change in grain prices.
