Eastern European sunflower seed supply is scarce this season, and rapid price gains are prompting European buyers to look at India. USDA data shows India harvested only 185,000 tonnes of sunflower seed in 2020/21, the third-lowest level in 20 years.
EU imports from India have fallen sharply since 2008.
India's small crop limits how much it can ease the European shortage, so tight supply for sunflower meal is likely to persist. Any Indian export interest adds only modest volume.
