Researchers ran an emergy assessment of four partial fishmeal substitutes: two microalgae biomasses, insect meal and poultry by-product meal. Insect meal showed the highest environmental efficiency, followed by poultry by-product meal.
Both closed microalgae systems were penalized by low productivity and heavy seawater use.
The study favors insect and poultry by-product meals as sustainable fishmeal replacements, but it is a research finding with no immediate supply or price effect.
