The Panama Canal announced fee changes for transit reservations and other maritime services, effective April 15, 2021. Booking slot fees rise for Panamax and Neopanamax vessels, and auction base amounts are set for regular, super and Neopanamax vessels.
Higher canal reservation fees add to the cost of moving US and South American grain via the Pacific route, which can reduce the appeal of canal routing and shift flows toward longer alternatives. The effect is a modest upward pressure on delivered freight costs.
