Iran's veterinary authorities culled 1.4 million birds after H5N8 avian influenza struck 50 farms nationwide. Officials say the spread is under control and that the country has over 75 million laying hens with egg output above domestic demand.
The cull is small relative to Iran's flock and officials report surplus egg production, so the impact on feed demand and global prices is limited. Price spikes are attributed to distribution problems rather than supply shortage.
