The US Army Corps of Engineers said the early Upper Mississippi shipping season may start less robust than usual because construction at Lock and Dam 25 near Winfield, Missouri will limit navigation on the entire river until the end of March. The Corps noted a typical 15-barge tow moves as much as 1,050 semis or 200 rail cars.
Restricted barge navigation raises freight costs and can widen basis for upriver grain, supporting barge-related pricing and pushing more volume onto trucks and rail.
