The NGFA declared the Mid-Mississippi River open for navigation at 7 a.m. on March 29, 2021, after a barge reached Dubuque, Iowa with an empty covered cargo barge suitable for loading. The declaration follows a special three-person committee vote under NGFA trading rules.
Reopening the Mid-Mississippi allows barge shipments of grain from upriver origins, easing freight constraints and tightening the spread between barge and rail rates.
