US hog prices have risen for 14 straight weeks to their highest level since the 2014 PED outbreak. The national negotiated cash carcass price averaged about $107/cwt last week, more than triple the same week last year, and May lean hog futures closed at $109.35/cwt.
Tight supply combined with strong pork cutout values is lifting hog prices, while the futures curve points to a sharp decline into fall. Feeder buyers face high hog-side margins but should expect prices to ease later in the year.
