Total world grain and oilseed output is forecast to rise about 106 million tonnes (3.2%) to 3.423 billion tonnes in 2021/22, with China, Ukraine, South America and the US leading acreage expansion. Nutrien expects US and Canadian growers to raise crop input spending 4% to 7% this year, and Brazilian input costs to rise 12% to 14%.
Expanding acreage and higher grain prices increase demand for fertilizer and fuel, which should keep input prices firm through summer. Farmers face higher input costs even as crop output grows.
