The rupiah was forecast to weaken on May 20, 2021, after minutes from the Federal Reserve's meeting pointed to possible discussions on tightening as the US economy recovers. It fell 0.56% to 14,315 per dollar in early trade, while the US 10-year yield rose to about 1.69%.
Higher US yields and tapering expectations tend to strengthen the dollar against emerging-market currencies. A weaker rupiah raises the cost of dollar-priced feed imports for Indonesian buyers.
