The average live hog price for 51-52% lean hogs in June 2017 was $60.61/cwt, up $10.15 from May and the highest since December 2014. The jump came mainly from tighter farm-to-retail marketing margins, as the farm share of retail pork value reached 28.1%.
Narrow packer and retail margins lifted hog prices, but rising slaughter later in summer is expected to lower retail pork prices and widen margins, pressuring live hog prices. Producers should expect this favorable spread to fade.
