Arcosa Marine Products introduced a 200-by-70-foot barge designed to carry 40 more 40-foot containers than two standard hopper barges occupy. The company built two such barges to promote container-on-barge movement on U.S. rivers.
The design was presented at FreightWeekSTL in St. Louis.
More efficient container-on-barge capacity could shift some inland freight away from rail and trucks over time. The effect on grain barge rates is limited.
