Dry bulk shipping rates have reached decade highs, with spot rates for all bulker size categories at levels not seen since the late 2000s. Strong container shipping demand is spilling over into dry bulk, and Genco, Eagle Bulk and Safe Bulkers reported strong starts to the year.
Higher bulk freight costs raise the landed cost of grains and oilseeds, which can narrow export margins and widen basis differentials for origin-to-destination trade.
