Grain Central's Andrew Whitelaw marks one year since China imposed tariffs of 80.5% on Australian barley following an anti-dumping investigation. Barley prices fell 17% in May 2020 and a further 3% in June, but have since held above the 50th percentile.
Australian markets have diversified as a result.
Losing China's barley demand forced Australian exports into other markets, and Chinese demand for coarse grains has kept Australian barley prices supported by proxy. Unless China changes course or a WTO ruling comes through, the tariff's effects on barley trade flows are expected to persist.
