China blocked Canada's first request at the WTO Dispute Settlement Body to set up a panel on its canola seed import restrictions. China said the move was premature and that it was willing to continue engagement.
A panel was widely expected to be set up at the next meeting.
The block only delays the dispute process, so it has little immediate effect on canola trade flows. Ongoing restrictions still limit Canadian canola seed supply to China's crushers and feed sector.
