Hutchinsons crop nutrition manager Tim Kerr urges UK growers not to skip phosphate despite UK fertiliser prices nearly doubling in 12 months. TSP was about £480/t and DAP £580-600/t in late July.
He notes that in 2007/08, when prices were similar, the arable area receiving phosphate fell 25%.
High phosphate prices may cut application rates, which could reduce yields and later support demand for phosphate products. Elevated input costs squeeze feed-grain margins for buyers.
