South Africa's Department of Agriculture has confirmed it will not compensate poultry producers for healthy at-risk birds culled during the early 2021 bird flu outbreak. Farmers lost about 1.5 billion rand, and about 2.7 million birds were culled.
Without compensation, producers may have less incentive to report outbreaks, which could lead to larger outbreaks and bigger supply losses later. Near-term feed demand effects are minor.
