EUMOFA published a study on fishmeal and fish oil production and trade flows in the EU. It reports 2018 global fishmeal output of 5.8 million tonnes and fish oil output near 1.3 million tonnes, and says the EU supplies 10-15% of global output but imports the balance of its demand.
The study also notes that El Niño events affecting Peru can move prices.
The EU's reliance on imports means its fishmeal prices track global supply, which is concentrated in Peru. Buyers should watch Peruvian catch conditions as the main driver of price risk.
