Brewers are contracting Idaho malting barley for the 2022 crop earlier than usual and at much higher prices. Growers' contract rates are expected to rise 40% or more in Idaho, Montana and North Dakota, with one Idaho grower getting $14/cwt versus $9.50-10 normally.
Brewers locking up malting supply early tightens the US barley market and can push feed barley prices higher as growers shift acreage and supply tightens.
