The Mississippi River is running lower than usual for this time of year, at about 200,000 cubic feet per second, which is still strong enough to push salt water upriver. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is rebuilding a sill of dredged material to hold back the saltwater wedge, after last year's sill washed away.
Officials warn salt water could reach as far north as Natchez, Mississippi if action is not taken soon.
Saltwater intrusion threatens freshwater supplies for refineries and businesses along the lower river, and low water already slows barge movements that carry grain and feed ingredients to export terminals. Constrained barge logistics and higher freight costs can widen Gulf basis and raise delivered feed costs.
