The USDA's APHIS NVSL confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 clade 2.3.4.4b by PCR in two dairy cattle herds in Washington, after the herds showed clinical signs. The herds had tested negative through routine National Milk Testing Strategy surveillance before this detection.
These are the first confirmed livestock HPAI detections in Washington, and APHIS is sequencing the virus and conducting on-farm investigations.
Infections in dairy herds can reduce milk output and raise biosecurity concerns for the dairy sector, which may weigh modestly on milk prices. Any spread to new states would add supply uncertainty for dairy-related feed demand.
