Canada's 2021 canola crop was forecast at 14.75 million tonnes in mid-September, down 24% from 2020 and the lowest in nine years, due to drought-driven yield losses. Analysts say final production could fall below 13 million tonnes, while Australia is having one of its best canola years.
A much smaller Canadian crop tightens canola meal and oil availability for importers, supporting prices. Australia's large crop may partly offset the shortfall in export markets.
