SDSU swine specialist Bob Thaler says tight lysine supplies have persisted for several weeks and nearly doubled lysine prices after imports from China were halted. Swine producers are reformulating rations with more DDGS and soybean meal, and the shortage is expected to last into spring.
Less lysine in rations also means more nitrogen in manure, which helps offset high fertilizer prices.
Reformulation toward DDGS and soybean meal adds demand for those feeds while lysine stays scarce and expensive. The expected duration into spring keeps the supportive effect on soymeal and DDGS prices in place.
