The United Soybean Board and other corn and soybean checkoff groups have offered $1 million to the Army Corps of Engineers to help fund design and engineering for upgrading Lock and Dam 25 near Winfield, Missouri. The project would enlarge the lock from 600-foot to 1,200-foot tows, since standard 15-barge tows must currently be split and reassembled, which can take more than two hours.
A longer-term upgrade would speed barge transit on the upper Mississippi and reduce lock bottlenecks, but it has no near-term effect on supply or prices.
