Western Canada's barley market is responding to a 2021 drought, with the crop expected at 6.5-7.0 million tonnes, about four million less than last year. Feed barley bids have set a record near $8.00 per bushel, and the malt premium over feed has widened to $2.50-3.00 per bushel.
A sharply smaller crop and tight malt supply push barley prices higher and leave feeders with few substitutes, supporting feed barley costs into the new year.
