American Patriot Container Transport CEO Sal Litrico announced on December 17 that the company had issued a solicitation to seven U.S. shipyards for four container vessels, with an option for four more. The company also announced new partners for a container port at Herculaneum targeting operations by the fourth quarter of 2024.
The vessels are designed for 2,375 TEU and 1,800 TEU capacities.
Lower-cost river container service could give Midwest exporters an extra route to ocean markets, marginally reducing freight costs for containerized agricultural goods. The impact on bulk grain and feed pricing remains small in the near term.
