Mexico's Supreme Court ratified a precautionary measure, in place since 2013, that bans permits for sowing genetically modified corn. The court also ruled that judges in class action suits can order any precautionary measure needed to protect collective rights.
The decisions were challenged by Bayer-Monsanto, Syngenta, Pioneer-DuPont and Dow AgroSciences.
The ruling reinforces the ban on GM corn planting in Mexico, which keeps Mexico reliant on imported yellow corn for feed. It supports continued US corn export demand but adds to the long-term risk of reduced GM corn trade.
After 439 past neutral policy events, Corn moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (51% higher; middle half -1.3% to +1.2%), and +1.1% over 20.
