Israel's Ministry of Agriculture expects a shortage of about 14 million eggs because of an H5N1 avian influenza outbreak, against monthly consumption of around 200 million. The minister opened the market to duty-free imports of 70-100 million eggs.
The outbreak has also killed more than 5,200 migratory cranes in the Hula Valley.
Lost layer flocks and the emergency import response shift egg supply in Israel, but the story has limited direct effect on grain, oilseed or meal prices. Its main feed link is through small changes in local layer demand.
