A Middle East Institute report warns that Morocco's role in supplying phosphate fertilizer to Africa is at risk from high energy prices and climate change. Morocco holds about 75% of the world's phosphate rock reserves, and its state miner OCP held a 54% share of fertilizer exports to Africa in 2020.
Morocco's dominant position in phosphate supply means any energy-cost or climate disruption there can tighten global phosphate supply and support fertilizer prices.
