The Brazilian real rose for a fifth straight week, closing at BRL 5.234 per dollar on February 11, down 1.5% on the week and 5.9% year to date. Strong foreign appetite for Brazilian assets and the release of Brazil's central bank minutes drove the gains.
The U.S. dollar index was 96.0, up 0.6% on the week.
Sustained real strength continues to lower the local-currency cost of imported feed ingredients and fuel for Brazilian producers. It also reduces the dollar value of Brazilian exports, which can support global prices for Brazilian-origin products.
