The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is deepening the lower Mississippi River ship channel under a $238 million project. Ships began using a 48-ft controlling draft in December, the first change since the 47-ft standard set in the 1980s, with a 50-ft target still ahead.
Deeper draft allows larger vessels to load more fully at Gulf export elevators, which can lower per-ton ocean freight for grain and meal shipments over time.
