A planning application has been lodged in Cheddleton, Staffordshire Moorlands, for a food-grade edible bone factory that would create 30 jobs. The plant would process bones from approved UK boning halls that are currently classed as Category 3 inedible by-products.
The developer describes the technology as the first of its kind in the country.
If built, the plant would divert bones from the inedible rendering stream, slightly reducing meat and bone meal supply over time; the effect on prices is minimal at this planning stage.
