RaboResearch reports that western European malting barley prices are about 50% above year-ago levels, with the malt-feed spread turning negative in France as wheat prices soar. Malt makers, for whom barley is about 65% of costs, face the biggest impact, while brewers see a smaller effect since barley is about 5% of their costs.
The report warns that protectionist export restrictions could disrupt the malting barley value chain.
Elevated malting barley prices and a possible export curb in western Europe would keep barley costs firm and tighten supply to maltsters.
