STX Pan Ocean, South Korea's largest bulk-shipping line, reported third-quarter net income down 92% to US$10.9 million, with sales down 61%. The company blamed overcapacity, a global slowdown and lower cargo rates, which were 61% below a year earlier on average.
Weak bulk shipping rates reflect soft demand for commodity hauling, which keeps ocean freight costs for grain and meal cargoes low. The earnings drop mainly reflects the rate slump rather than a new supply shock.
