Peru's first anchoveta fishing season of 2022 is progressing, having officially begun in January with a catch cap of about 486,000 tons or an end date of June 30. Landings from January to February reached 81,700 metric tons, up 139% from the same period in 2021.
Fishmeal supply from Peru is a key input for animal feed, and the strong early landings point to adequate near-term supply, which tends to ease fishmeal prices. La Niña conditions remain a risk that could cut catches later in the season.
