Standard Chartered economists say Vietnam is a major beneficiary of the RCEP trade pact, which took effect on 1 January 2022 and eliminates about 90% of tariffs among signatories over 20 years. Agriculture is among the export sectors expected to benefit, and Vietnam targets export growth of 6-7% a year from 2021 to 2030.
Lower tariffs across the RCEP bloc could lift Vietnamese agricultural and processing demand, supporting regional imports of feed grains and protein over time. The effect on near-term commodity prices is modest because the tariff cuts phase in gradually.
