Iowa State University extension specialists warn that animals euthanized with pentobarbital should not be rendered. They cite US Fish and Wildlife Service reports of wildlife and dog deaths and an FDA zero-tolerance policy for the drug in animal food.
If renderers must exclude pentobarbital-euthanized animals, meat and bone meal and tallow supply could tighten in affected areas, though the effect on prices is likely limited.
