USDA's Economic Research Service reports that HPAI has struck commercial poultry operations including 18 egg-laying facilities, with more than 29 million layers lost as of May 2. The table-egg layer flock was estimated at 305.2 million on April 1, after 16.9 million birds were lost in March.
Losing layer hens cuts egg supply in a market with few substitutes, supporting high egg prices and reducing demand for feed used by layers.
