Dry bulk grain shipping is seeing shorter voyage distances as Ukrainian grain has been absent from seaborne markets for over 90 days and Atlantic cargoes stay within the basin. Grain's share of Panamax tonne-miles has fallen to about 23% from roughly 30% a year earlier, and Brazil's corn crop is projected at a record 116 million tonnes with exports doubling.
Shorter voyages and fewer grain cargoes weaken freight demand, while expected Brazilian corn exports and new Chinese access add some supply to the market. Corn export prospects from Brazil are a bearish factor for US corn and for freight rates.
