Wisconsin's May egg production rose 10% from April but was down 33% from May 2021, according to USDA data. Average layer numbers were just over five million, versus 7.5 million a year earlier, after avian influenza hit flocks including a 2.7 million hen depopulation in March.
Lower layer numbers in a major egg-producing state reduce national egg supply and keep prices elevated. Gradual flock recovery would ease that pressure over time.
