Chinese lysine manufacturers and exporters are building inventories in Chicago to shorten supply chains, with the first shipment reaching a Foreign Trade Zone in Savannah, IL in April 2022 for Midwest feed makers. Lysine has been short across North America since 2020, and a container shipment ordered for February only arrived in mid-June because of China's zero-Covid lockdowns and US port congestion.
Warehoused US inventory should ease the North American lysine shortage and reduce delivery delays for feed mills, which could soften lysine prices over time.
